"Looking out our Back Door."
HUDSON RIVER VALLEY - Hyde Park, New York
FDR at age 13 with his father, James Roosevelt, April 1895.
This 110 acre estate was purchased by FDR's father in 1867 as a working dairy farm overlooking the Hudson River.
The family named this house: "Springwood". Franklin was born here; and lived here with his wife Eleanor.
Tim is stamping our National Park PassBook.
FDR
redefined the role of government in America. He established: Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Deposit and Insurance Corp.,
Social Security, Minimum Wage, and Unemployment. He served during the
economic crisis of the Depression and WWII.
The museum housed his office and also his collection of ship models which reminded me of my Grandpa Alwood and brother Larry, each enjoyed putting together model ships.
This pic below is the first Presidential Library and Museum. It was created and designed by FDR. He died in 1945. He was elected to the Presidency of an
unprecedented 4 terms.
No better way to spend a sunny spring afternoon than on the lawn of the next door neighbor of FDR: the (Frederick & Louise) Vanderbilt's residence, since 1895. It is made of Indiana limestone in a Beau Arts Style on 211 acres on a cliff abutting the Hudson River.
A quote from FDR: "A Nation must believe in the capacity of its own people to learn from the past that they can gain judgment in creating their own future."
We have arrived our first stop which is to visit the Roosevelt's and the Vanderbilt's estates in Hyde Park, New York. Their estates are situated in the Hudson River Valley.

Across the street from FDR's residence is this parkway which includes an active Drive-IN Movie Theatre. You can see the screen; the sound broadcasts thru your vehicle radio station. |
