9/1/2018 Stop #22 John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Key Largo

From: casarollnotes.blogspot.com
Tim and Linda Bunyan

From our Keys outpost on Big Pine Key, we made a couple of day drive visits South into Key West.  We are now headed North up to Key Largo for a final week in the Keys at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park on the Overseas Highway.

"The Real Florida"   The park was created to protect and preserve a portion of the only living coral reef in the United States.
Miami newspaper editor, John D. Pennekamp was one of the early proponents of the preservation of the park's coral reef.  He also helped establish Everglades National Park.

"Looking out our Back Door"

Driving the Keys from Key West to Key Largo

KEY LARGO, playground for snorkel, scuba diving tours, and boat rentals!

DIVERS DIRECT, located next to Office Depot (they know their business here in Key Largo).

Divers Direct store is huge!

The longest row in the store; the entire aisle filled with sunblock personal care products.

Restaurant in Key Largo and dog friendly for those that want their dogs at the table!

Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has all the facilities, but no boat today due too excessive winds.

Typical Key Largo boat.  The name:  "High Maintenance"
No snorkel boat ride, so Tim maintained the roof on the house.  (caulking gun in hand)
 'fixing before it needs fixing'

Other sites at Key Largo:
Inside the  Pinecrest (Cuban) Bakery; love anyplace that has chandeliers!
The front patio of the Bakery serves a pleasant place for 'Mexican-style' danish and Cabano coffee.... CUBAN!

Time to head North and West to St. Petersberg, Florida........by way of Florida's
"Liquid Heart", the Shark Valley portion of Everglades National Park.  The Everglades consists of a freshwater sawgrass prairie that annually floods to become a shallow 30-mile wide river.

The Everglades is developing flood control projects that manager the marshes, ponds, and gator holes for water deliveries throughout the Florida valley.

We stopped at the United States Smallest Post Office (52 Square Feet): Ochopee, Florida.
Also serves as Ticket Office for
Trailways Bus Lines.

Family members should receive stamped card from Ochepee !!!

We have arrived our at final Florida stop of the West side of the state at Tampa Bay.  We are staying at Fort De Soto Campground at St Petersberg, Florida.
