Eureka, CA Elks Lodge 5/29 - 6/1 2019

Eureka, CA



TIM and I depart Sycamore Grove in Red Bluff to head West over the Coastal Mountains onto the (world trailer-pulling championship road): HWY 299 to CA Coast in Eureka.

We enter the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area at Brandy Creek caused the Carr fire. 

 Shasta and Trinity Counties.   Now: June 1, 2019 beginning to rebuild
 New cable and phone lines installation.  CARR Fire was: finally contained: 
August 30, 2018. 
 (The Butte County Paradise fire began on November 8, 2018.)


Hydroseeding material all ready to apply; aimed towards mitigating the risk of
 sediment runoff.
 Fire officials explain caused by a trailer’s tire failure, led its trim to scrape the asphalt and ignite sparks resulting in one of the state's largest and most destructive wildfire on records 142,000 acres. July 2018.

 Tim is polishing important parts for the trek over the Coastal Mountains: Hwy 299 to Eureka, CA.
We test our new disc brakes at Buckhorn Summit at 3,200 elevations with 6 percent grade.  Then at Oregon Mountain Pass an 8 percent grade at 2888 Elevation.

40 miles from Eureka we begin the decline thru 6 Rivers at 1726 Elevation.  Redwood Creek Watershed.

Mountains open to the long crevice; the canyon and then Blue Lake.  Switchbacks down the canyon to rolling green hills.... pines remain at 1144 Elevation.

6-8% grades to come out of the Coastal Mnts into Eureka, CA. at 63 Elevation.  We are glad to take off the driving gloves this day and settle into the Elks Lodge for our stay at Eureka, California.

 Cross over from Fernbridge (1911) the Eel River bridge to reach Lolita.
Fernbridge (creamery) 
 The creamery is going strong, located in Fernbridge next to the railroad tracks; however, distribution is by truck these days.  Ferndale across the Eel River Estuary Bridge built in 1911.

 Quaint outdoor seating area.
  Some of the best varieties of cheese in the nation!  Bob, the cheesemaker owns his own cows so the milk is fresh.  We bought cheese curds, dill Havarti, and pizza cheese.  
Guy Fieri ate here at the Lolita Cheese Factory. 
We have a grilled cheese with Oceanside jellies made locally on the Indian reservation.



The product: "Milkman" production, during the war, brought this processing plant to a large scale.  Now closed, but a museum piece.  

FERNDALE

More unusual in this town.  An above-tank gasoline stations!

 Quaint town with historic, turn of the century Victorians.









The Old Steeple Concerts & Events Church.  115-year-old Methodist church now a Ferndale Music Company.

 SAMOA 
.  From Eureka to the Peninsula. The Peninsula is where the Cookhouse is located

 

 

 Cookhouse has one menu served all day every day.   Pot Roast Stew and vegetables were the main portions.   Reminds me of Grandpa and Grandma's Logging Camp where Grandma would cook up pancakes as big as the plate for the loggers for morning breakfast.

To final out our visit to Eureka, we drove a short distance to Arcata to view the northernmost campus of the 23-school California State University (CSU) system.   Situated hillside at the edge of a coast redwood forest, is Humboldt State University.   Our family's daughter, Rebecca, just graduated this year with her studies in Environmental Sciences.

We begin to head straight North from California.  We plan to spend the month of June
in 7 places along the Oregon Coast for our Pacific Northwest Travel Tour 2019 !!! 
 California, it has been wonderful, time to move on!
