Ketchum, Idaho - Sun Valley at Meadows RV Park 9/14 - 9/18 2020 Travel Tour

         From: casarollnotes.blogspot.com
                    Tim and Linda Bunyan

We arrived at Meadows RV Park, full hookup at $50.00/night here in the Summer at the  'Winter Wonderland' of the resort city of Sun Valley, Idaho.   Adjacent to the city of Ketchum and within the greater Wood River valley our RV site is nestled in with others who (as we have) come to this beautiful place simply reside within the most attractive spots we have visited.
The Meadows R. V. Park on Broadway Run, Ketchum, Idaho.  One and only RV park near Sun Valley!
The 'new normal' 2020; our RV neighborhood reflects the new Webex Worker.
We spoke with several
40-year-olds surrounding us in the RV park.  Their stories were: the office is temporarily closed, working from home,  moved out of the apartment from New York, bought an RV, and now working for their company online from their RV home!
Tim and I left the workers to their laptops and first went on a bike ride to see the features of this valley.  We were delighted riding on a scenic paved pathway called the Wood River Trail with access directly from our RV!
The Cold Springs Bridge is the 208-foot former railroad bridge and one of the country's last remaining engineering legacies developed and patented by George Pegram.  There are only 10 of these bridges surviving in the U.S., seven of them located in Idaho.
The Wood River Trail once part of the historic Union Pacific Railroad tracks, where trains transported gold and silver bullion during the mining era of the 1880s, is now a paved 32-mile multi-use trail.

The first mile of the Wood River Tail was paved in 1984; after additional donations completed in 1992.  FARMERS MRKT has located in a lot at an exit off the bike path.  A Directory at the Market indicting in addition to fresh produce, a variety of plants, flowers, meat, eggs, dairy, baked goods, preserves, and ready to eat foods and crafts are available.  The local fresh calendar lists fruits and vegetables. by seasonal month.
John Grade is an internationally renowned sculptor.  His creation, SPUR, is along the Wood River Valley bike path inspired by the unique geology found in Craters of the Moon.  Made of carved Alaskan cedar and modeled after a digital scan of a lava tube.  During the 2016 National Park Centennial, it was positioned at Craters of the Moon National Monument (we just stayed there previous to our stay here in Sun Valley).
Also, the SPUR sculpture refers to the history of the railroad in Wood River where the Union Pacific railroad spur ran from Shoshone to Ketchum, Idaho alluding the fact the critical role the railroad played in the valley.
ART
Unique to Sun Valley art masterpieces are not all kept inside.  Bronze statues line Fourth Street.  Rod Kagan was an American artist known for his totem pole-like bronze sculptures.  Named the winner of the 1984 National Endowment for the Arts.  His artwork is displayed in these public spaces and throughout Idaho.  My brother, Mike, also has a Kagan bronze sculpture displayed at his Rancho Mirage home.
Another Rod Kagan represented by Gail Severn Gallery, in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Bald Mountain: River Run Plaza, an exit from the Wood River Bike Trail, we cross the Trail Creek at the base of Bald Mountain.
River Run Lodge and Village offer a unique setting and all types of shops for ski and mountain bike and outdoor enthusiasts.
On-site patio, fireplace, and a full bar for access to the Roundhouse Express Gondola.

The gondola is covid-closed but usually a trip up to the summit of Bald Mountain in the summer you can stroll the meadows or hike on the trails.
Tim finds fine craftsmanship at the River Run Lodge built for snow conditions.
A huge board of Trail information at the base of Bald Mountain.
Dollar Mountain Dollar Lodge
We head on the bike trail through downtown to continue along to Dollar Lodge
at the base of Dollar Mountain which caters primarily to beginner skiers.

Sun Valley Lodge   Count Felix Schaffgosch was hired by Union Pacific Charman Averell Harriman to scout the West for the finest spot on which to build a destination ski resort.  Within three days of arriving in Ketchum, the Count wired, this is the most beautiful place.

Outdoor sculpture by Roy M. Harris of Sigi and Sepp, walking wearing ski clothes and caps in memory of their years devoted to the Sun Valley Ski School.  They were members of the Tenth, Austrian ski instructors who between them worked 72 seasons at Sun Valley.

Some of the people of Valley Lodge is filled with star-studded history with black and white. photos of smiling stars.
Sun Valley has only been operated by three owners over the decades.  The independent, current owner is the Holding Family making memorable experiences for generations.
Gretchen Fraser became the first American to win an Olympic skiing medal.

in Sun Valley along the bike trail.
The outdoor ice rink is one of the few year-round rinks and the home of the Sun Valley Ice Shows, Olympic and world-class skaters.
The coolest place in Sun Valley to watch from rink side Olympic and World-class skaters.  The outdoor ice rink is open year-round and home to Ice Shows, skate rental, and group and private lessons.

We continue our bike ride on the grounds to the Sun Valley Pavillion.  This outdoor amphitheater is showing the 1961 movie "West Side Story" this evening.

The RAM restaurant at the Sun Valley Inn.
Locals favorite since 1937.  Tim and I come here for fine dining at this rustic, yet elegant dinner house with historic charm.  Pianist Larry Harshbarger brings a classic ambiance on a baby grand piano.  We chose from the "Heritage Menu" dishes such as pork tenderloin, schnitzel, and Hungarian goulash from the restaurant's long and storied culinary tradition.
The Village Station and the park-like grounds are delightful
Even the gardener is happy to be here!  He waves as he passes by.
Village Station

Classic Mountain town with a touch of European style.

The Sun Valley Inn opened its doors in 1937 and is still a welcoming and stylish place.

Bike riding around the property grounds is beautiful.  The Wildflower condominiums in the background are perhaps the most sought-after lodging in the area with a pool and tennis court included in the amenities.
Sun Valley Club
a complex in the Rocky Mountains located in Sun Valley, Idaho.  It consists of three courses totaling 45 holes: Trail Creek, White Clouds, and Elkhorn Golf Club.  All through this visit, we think of our golfing friends: Bonnie and Jack, Deb and Dave, the Telliers, Kathy and Lew, David and Mildred, and golfers we have met would love this paradise.  This is a place (even as a non-golfer) we would return for year-round activities in a well cared for area.

Ernest Hemingway legacy fell in love with Sun Valley and made it his home where he finished For Whom the Bell Tolls at the Sun Valley Lodge.

Sun Valley, to me, is one huge garden with a downtown
parks, sculptures, trails, mountain bike trails. golfing, skiing, ice skating, paddle boarding, rafting,  Churches,
parks, nature preserve, lift rides, and restaurants.

We return and head the other direction on the bike trail for our last day here.
Here we are at the Sawtooth Botanical Gardens.  This arboretum is self-guided thru native trees and shrubs.  This educational center was established in 2004 featuring a loop trail through several drip-watered plant communities.

Tibetan Prayer Wheel within the gardens.
We must leave to return someday to one of the most attractive spots we've seen!
